How do I know if I need brakes?

Aside from getting a brake inspection, there a few indicators that you may need a brake repair. First and foremost, and this applies to your entire car not just the brakes, strange noises that occur that were not there when you first bought it. If you hear rubbing noises while driving or grinding noises when you are braking, or possibly you will feel a shuddering while braking. These are good indicators you need a brake repair.

Other indications would be the BRAKE light on the dash. Although this will illuminate for multiple reasons, the most prevalent would be when you are low on brake fluid. Many people think low brake fluid is caused by a leak in the brake system. Your brake system is a sealed hydraulic system. So when you push the pedal the fluid is dispersed from a master cylinder to the wheels where the brakes are located. As the brake pads wear down, it take more fluid to reach the wheels. As the brake pads wear thinner the path is longer. Little by little there is less fluid in the reservoir. The sensor in reservoir sinks as the fluid level sinks. When the sensor stops floating, the BRAKE light will come on. Sometimes you notice the light just comes on while turning or braking. Once you level off the light goes out. This is caused by the fluid shifting.

Sometimes, you will also see the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) or the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) light come on at the same time. They are sometimes related but not always. Read more about ABS.

*The items highlighted in RED mean you need immediate brake repair. If they are AMBER, which none of these would be, they need to be repaired but there is no worry for safety.
